In case anyone needed proof that senatorial candidate (and governor-with-benefits) Charlie Crist disregarded the will of the people when he signed Senate Bill 2080 need only look at the numbers.
The bill, which stripped citizens of their right to weigh in on massive consumptive water use permits (now issued solely at the discretion of political appointees), was supported by large development interests, who like to suck dry the Floridan Aquifer without the pesky public knowning about it.
Previously Crist claimed that “after consulting with all interested parties, considering all points of view and thoroughly weighing all sides of this issue,” he’d decided to sign SB 2080. But as a recent public records request makes clear, the feedback he got from the public shows overwhelming opposition to the bill. Below is a tally of the number of emails and phone calls the Gov. recieved for and against 2080, provided by the governors office.
Guess those lobbyists and campaign contributors Crist met with behind closed doors carried a little more clout.
