every last bite…

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Folio Weekly’s inaugural Bite Club event was held last nite at Culhanes Irish Pub in Atlantic Beach, and was a huge success. Bite Club members relished the free food and drink samples from Culhanes upscale “gastro-pub” menu, and the four sisters who own the restauarant spared no expense on the menu:

mussells in a sherry cream sauce with toast points

mini crab cakes

seared tuna served over a seasame ginger veggie slaw

gourmet sliders

duet of petit wellingtons: chicken & salmon with sauces

apple tart with whiskey glaze

mini root beer float

Go to biteclublog.com for see photos and comments from the event, and look in next week’s Folio Weekly for a recap in The Eye.

Strings For A Change

Friday, November 13th, 2009

A little while back, Discount Music on Jacksonville’s Westside offered free guitar or bass strings to anyone who brought in nonperishable food items as a donation to the North Florida Second Harvest Food Bank. The event was such a success, they’re doing it again. Bring your guitar or bass in (and at least one nonperishable food item) and get a free set of stings installed and tuned. National Free String Change Day is held throughout the day on Saturday, Nov. 14 at Discount Music, 1711 Blanding Blvd., Jacksonville. (Limit two sets per person while supplies last.) 738-7111.

food for thought

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Tonight is the last night to catch “Food, Inc.,” a documentary that “lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer,” at San Marco Theatre, where it’s been showing for the past week. Showtimes are 7:10 p.m. and 9 p.m. The trailer promises you’ll never look at dinner the same again … can’t be good for the theater’s concessions sales, but good for a public that needs to be more aware of which foods they’re putting in their bodies and what goes into producing them.

San Marco Theatre is located at 1996 San Marco Blvd. in Jacksonville. 396-4845.

hot as hell

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Anyone who’s got a passion for hot stuff has probably already caught wind of Sriracha Chili Sauce. The sauce (pronounced SIR-rotch-ah) was recently profiled in a New York Times story that explored the thick red condiment’s popularity.

However, a list that accompanied the story of restaurants that have incorporated Sriracha into their menu failed to include any in Northeast Florida — despite the fact that St. Augustine Beach’s Cafe Eleven serves a Sriracha burrito. For the record, Burrito Gallery in downtown Jacksonville and FA Cafe, just north of Cafe Eleven in St. Augustine Beach, both serve the sauce tableside, though it hasn’t yet made it into any menu items.

Know of other Northeast Florida establishments that’ve caught the Sriracha buzz? Feel free to chime in with a post.
