elvis, in the building

Sometime between sound check and taking the stage at Cafe Eleven around 10, Elvis Perkins could be spotted, dripping wet and wearing a cowboy hat, attempting to cross A1A in St. Augustine Beach.

His dip in the ocean must have proved refreshing because the acclaimed folk musician, amid a heavy touring schedule opening for Bon Iver, rolled out a staggeringly good show. The nearly sold-out crowd soaked in Elvis faves like “While You Were Sleeping” and “Shampoo,” while his band Dearland — complete with brass — moved the songs with mad skills and powerful emotion.

We’re nursing a hangover and raw from a poor night’s sleep, but the show was well worth it. Perhaps a dip in the ocean will cure that.
